UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA CELEBRATES THE 5TH INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MEDICAL PHYSICS WITH GLOBAL WEBCAST

In celebration of the 150th birthday of Marie Sklodowska-Curie, the 2017 International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) dedicated the this year celebration’s theme to women safety in radiation medicine: “Medical Physics: Providing a Holistic Approach to Women Patients and Women Staff Safety in Radiation Medicine”.

A global webcast on “Marie Curie’s Life and Achievements” organised by the University of Malaya (UM) in cooperation with the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), has been successfully held on 7 November 2017 to celebrate the 2017 International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP). The webcast was streamed live on YouTube from the Clinical Auditorium, UM, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Three distinguished speakers delivered their presentations during the webcast: Professor Dr. Madan Rehani, Vice President of the IOMP on the topic of “IDMP: What, Why, How, Expectations and Outreach Achieved”; Dr. María del Rosario Pérez, Scientist of WHO on the topic of “Building on Marie Curie’s Legacy for Strengthening Radiation Safety Culture in Healthcare”; and Dr. Noriah Jamal, Director of the Division of Planning and International Relations, Malaysian Nuclear Agency, on the topic of “Madam Marie Curie - A Great Scientist’s Contribution to Humankind”.

IDMP is an excellent opportunity to promote the role of medical physicists in the international wide medical scene. This year, the IOMP celebrated the 5th IDMP by organizing three international events in Jaipur, Kuala Lumpur and Vienna in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the WHO, the Asia-Oceania Congress of Medical Physics and the University of Malaya. All three events were broadcast live in different time zones (GMT+1 (Vienna), GMT+5.5 (India) and GMT+8 (Malaysia) hour) to reach audiences in the respective regions.

International Day of Medical Physics 2020

University of Malaya

The year 2020 has been a challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The conduct of medical physics education at the University of Malaya has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching and learning activities are undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Despite the challenges of adapting to the new normal, the academic staffs under the Master of Medical Physics program continue to strive to provide high-quality postgraduate medical physics education in producing highly-skilled medical physicists.

To commemorate the International Day of Medical Physics 2020, the Master of Medical Physics students combined their theoretical knowledge and creativity in creating a total of five educational video clips in radiobiology and radiation protection topics. Specifically, the topics of the videos are as follow:

  1. Formation of free radicals
  2. Radiosensitivity during cell cycle
  3. Interaction of UV with human eyes
  4. Radiation protection during fluoroscopy
  5. Radiation protection in radiotherapy

These videos are also uploaded on the Facebook page of the UM Medical Physics. In addition, these videos are circulated among the various digital and mobile platforms for a wider audience.  Apart from educating the general public on the above topics, this assignment aims to cultivate social responsibility among medical physics students in public outreach and science communication.

The medical physics team from the University of Malaya would like to wish all medical physicists around the globe ‘Happy Medical Physics Day 2020’ and enjoy the video clips!

University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)

ASEAN COLLEGE OF MEDICAL PHYSICS (ACOMP) WORKSHOP ON INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY: SAFETY, OPTIMIZATION, DOSIMETRY AND QUALITY CONTROL (5-6 August 2016)

The two-day international “ASEAN College of Medical Physics (ACOMP) Workshop on Interventional Radiology: Safety, Optimization, Dosimetry and Quality Control” was held on 5th August 2016 at Pullman Hotel, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur and on 6th August 2016 at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur. The workshop was jointly organized by the Medical Physics Subgroup of Malaysian Institute of Physics (IFM) and the University of Malaya (UM), in collaboration with the ASEAN College of Medical Physics (ACOMP). The workshop was endorsed by the Southeast Asian Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (SEAFOMP), Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysian Society of Interventional Radiology (MYSIR) and Malaysian Society of Radiographers (MSR).

This two-day interventional radiology workshop aimed to provide the latest updates on radiological safety, optimization, dosimetry and quality assurance related aspects in the field of interventional radiology. The program was designed such that the first day of the workshop focused on the physical principles and theory of multiple aspects in interventional radiology. Various expertises included interventional radiologists, radiographers, nurses, medical physicists and regulators were invited to share their perspectives in this emerging field of medicine. The second day of the workshop was dedicated to practical / hands-on sessions. The topics for hands-on sessions included (1) patient dosimetry and measurement, (2) occupational dose assessment and radiation protection, and (3) quality control tests of the fluoroscopy systems.

Following introduction and welcoming message by the workshop director, Dr. Chai-Hong Yeong, the opening ceremony was officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Anushya Vijayanathan, coordinator for Continuing Biomedical Imaging Education (CBIE), UM. The workshop was accredited for Continuing Medical Education (CME, approved by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD Category A3: 10 credits). A total of 64 local and international participants across six countries (Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Qatar) have successfully attended the workshop. The organizers would like to thank all the participants, invited speakers, supporting organizations and sponsors for their support on this event.
